Installing Kitchen Cabinets

Installing kitchen cabinets, just like many things in life, is not rocket science. It can be a fun thing to do, actually, as long as you are willing to take the time and make the effort to get yourself prepared to install the kitchen furniture.

The number one pointer you have to drill into your head is this: plan ahead. That's it. If you plan everything right, and make sure that you have measures to carry out regardless of what happens, then chances are you will be able to install the perfect kitchen cabinet set.

This is all assuming that you are starting from a clean slate in an empty room that has no furniture, what-so-ever. Are you the one who is going to be doing the cooking and the baking? If so, ask yourself what ingredients you would want to have in your immediate vicinity, and the ones that you would rather have stored in the pantry or some other room in the house. Mentally picture the different things you’ll need in the kitchen. This will include flour, baking soda, powder, strainers, measuring cups, salt, sugar… you get the point. With all of these, you should have a pretty good idea what quantities you will be carrying at any one time. Flour, for example, is a useful item to have a couple of four-kilogram sacks of, that is, if you bake fairly often.

Make sure that there is also sufficient space for other things in the kitchen such as the oven, microwave and the like. We'll assume we didn't have to mention that.

You may decide that you will need about eight feet worth of space to store all your kitchen supplies and appliances, with the cabinets reaching about waist length. From the eight feet, you could divide this into the number of cabinet drawers you ought to have. For simplicity’s sake, we will assume that you will have two cabinet drawers of approximately four feet in length. Take into account the space between the drawers, as well as the space needed for the sink. Is this enough? If so, then we are ready to consider other factors.

The next step has to do with the actual cabinets you will be using. Cabinet hardware shops can be found in the phonebook or online. Look for the ones that fit in with your measurements. You will also have to choose according to your aesthetic taste, since of course you are going to have to want to look at these cabinets for the next few years at least.

For the installation itself, always have measuring devices with you. Oftentimes, there will be a need to cut a piece of wood some more or to readjust where the handles of the cabinets are supposed to be. All of these tools and accessories can be found in hardware stores.

You will also have to consider if you will be cleaning your kitchen cabinets fairly often, whether you use the kitchen a lot, or you keep away from it long enough for dust to accumulate.

Installing kitchen cabinets is very rewarding, especially knowing that you will be the one to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
